In this article, we'll explore the process of growing Lions Mane mushrooms from start to finish.

What is Lions Mane Mushroom?

Lions Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) is a type of edible mushroom that grows naturally in North America, Europe, and Asia. It is characterized by its long, flowing white spines that resemble the mane of a lion, hence its name. Lions Mane is sometimes referred to as "bearded tooth fungus" or "pom pom mushroom."

Aside from its unique appearance, Lions Mane is known for its potential health benefits. It contains compounds called polysaccharides and beta-glucans, which have been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It may also help promote nerve growth and improve cognitive function.

How to Grow Lions Mane Mushroom?

Growing Lions Mane mushrooms may seem intimidating, but it's actually quite simple. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Gather Materials

To grow Lions Mane mushrooms, you will need the following materials:

  • Lions Mane mushroom spawn
  • Sterilized sawdust or straw
  • Plastic bags or containers with lids
  • A spray bottle filled with water

Step 2: Prepare the Substrate

The substrate is the material that the mushroom will grow on. For Lions Mane mushrooms, sterilized sawdust or straw are good options. To prepare the substrate:

  1. Fill a large pot with sawdust or straw and add enough water to cover it.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. Drain the mixture and let it cool to room temperature.
  4. Add Lions Mane mushroom spawn to the cooled substrate and mix well.

Step 3: Incubate the Spawn

After mixing the spawn with the substrate, transfer the mixture into plastic bags or containers with lids. Poke some small holes in the containers to allow for air exchange.

Place the containers in a warm, dark place with a temperature between 65-75°F (18-24°C). The ideal humidity level should be around 80%. You can use a spray bottle filled with water to mist the containers daily to maintain the humidity level.

Step 4: Wait for Fruiting

After about 2-4 weeks, you should start to see white fuzzy growth on the surface of the substrate. This is known as mycelium and it means that the Lions Mane mushroom is growing.

Keep the containers in the same location until you see small, white spines starting to form. This signals that the fruiting stage has begun. The spines will continue to grow and eventually form the characteristic "pom pom" shape of the Lions Mane mushroom.

Step 5: Harvest and Store the Mushrooms

When the spines have reached their full size, it's time to harvest the mushrooms. Use a clean knife or scissors to cut the base of the mushroom stem, being careful not to damage the surrounding mycelium.

You can either use the mushrooms fresh or store them in the refrigerator for up to one week. To freeze, slice the mushrooms and lay them flat on a baking sheet. Freeze for 2 hours, then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag.
